Samsung and HTC may lead in Android sales, but LG is intent on catching up—even at the high-end. Our tests revealed a few significant flaws that weren’t immediately apparent given the Spectrum’s high-end specs, but it’s still a solid choice nonetheless.

Design, LTE, and Call QualityAnother big phone, the LG Spectrum is not as big as its peers. It measures 5.3 by 2.7 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and weighs five ounces; that’s an ounce lighter than the HTC Rezound ($199.99, 4 stars), but just a tenth of an ounce lighter than the Samsung Galaxy Nexus ($299.99, 4 stars). The shiny plastic rear cover looks a little flimsy, but the phone is lightweight for an LTE device, so it’s a reasonable trade-off. The 4.5-inch Gorilla Glass display is one of the Spectrum’s star features. It offers an ultra-sharp 720-by-1280-pixel resolution, a dense 329 ppi display that even trumps the 326-ppi Retina display on the iPhone 4S ($199.99, 4 stars), and a higher quality IPS panel that’s one of the brightest I’ve ever seen. Web page fonts look fantastic. Typing on the on-screen keyboard is easy in both portrait and landscape modes, and dialing numbers is responsive using the on-screen display.

The LG Spectrum is a 4G LTE (700MHz) phone with dual-band EV-DO Rev. a (850/1900MHz) and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. It also works as a 4G mobile hotspot for up to 10 devices simultaneously. On a rainy day in NYC, (which can sometimes affect data performance), I saw download speeds averaging 5 to 9 Mbps down and 6 Mbps to 9 Mbps up over LTE; we’ve seen download speeds as high as 16Mbps with another LG Spectrum. Voice quality was mixed, with a crisp tone in the earpiece and plenty of gain, although it distorted at the top settings. Transmissions through the mic were clear, with minimal street noise outdoors, although the tone was on the warm (read: slightly muffled) side. Reception was fine, but the phone heated up a bit during longer calls and while charging.

Calls sounded fine through an Aliph Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset ($129, 4 stars). Voice dialing worked well over Bluetooth, but the speakerphone was weak, with a tinny voice timbre and considerable distortion at the top volume setting. The 1830mAh battery was good for a solid 8 hours and 41 minutes of talk time; given that result, expect about three and a half hours of solid 4G LTE data streaming. if that’s not enough, you can swap the pack out for an optional 3040mAh battery.

User Interface, Hardware, and AppsThe Spectrum runs Android 2.3.5 out of the box; Verizon claims users can expect an update to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) by June. LG customized the UI, with menu icons divided into categories, and some light overlays for the dialer and other stock apps. there are also seven home screens you can customize and swipe between. you can drag and drop entire folders of apps onto the home screens, which is helpful, although you can’t turn the folders off if you’d rather have regular Android-style icon menus.

The next-generation 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm S3 processor should have been a screamer, but our benchmark results were a bit disappointing. Reads and writes to the memory card were unusually slow, our benchmark software reported the CPU as 1.2GHz instead of 1.5GHz, and our frame rate tests jumped around wildly and averaged about 40 percent lower than what the Samsung Galaxy S II scored, and that phone has the same processor. In real life, that affects gaming performance, and the Spectrum sometimes felt sluggish running day-to-day apps. It’s possible that LG is throttling back the CPU to prolong battery life, but that’s speculation; LG didn’t respond to our request for comment.

The Android Market offers more than 300,000 third-party apps, most of which the Spectrum should have no problem running. LG adds its own SmartWorld store that highlights high-definition apps. There’s also Smart Movie HD, which is a basic video editing program that lets you add themes, photos, and music to your recordings, and LG preloads Netflix and ESPN ScoreCenter apps.

Multimedia, Camera, and ConclusionsOtherwise, the Spectrum is a fine mobile multimedia machine. There’s a standard-size 3.5mm headphone jack on top, plus a microSD card slot underneath the battery cover. LG throws in a 16GB card (my 32GB SanDisk card also worked), and there’s 1.54GB of free internal storage. Music tracks sounded fine through Samsung Modus HM6450 Bluetooth headphones ($99, 4 stars). The music player worked smoothly and displayed album art when available. Standalone video files played well in full screen mode and looked extra sharp, particularly with 720p and 1080p files; DivX and XviD files were also no problem. you also get an HDMI out via a clumsy MHL adapter which you must purchase separately.

The 8-megapixel auto-focus camera includes a single LED flash, and there’s also a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera for video chats. Test photos looked sharp, detailed, and well balanced overall, with good resolution, if a slight grayish cast. Shutter speeds were fast at just 0.3 seconds in my tests. The auto-focus had some trouble with outdoor shots on a rainy day, but otherwise this is a good camera. Recorded 1080p (1920-by-1080-pixel) and 720p (1280-by-720-pixel) videos played smoothly at 29 frames per second.

If you’ve been following the Android phone race on Verizon, it seems like there’s a new winner every few weeks—sometimes even more often than that. The Spectrum gives you plenty of value for its entry price, but other formerly more expensive phones now cost the same. The HTC Rezound keeps the high-resolution display and adds a great set of Beats Audio headphones, although it’s heavier than the Spectrum, and its camera and camcorder don’t perform as well. Our current Editors’ Choice is the Motorola Droid RAZR ($199.99, 4.5 stars), which has a smaller, lower-resolution screen, but it’s also thinner and lighter, still packs LTE data speeds, and works with Motorola’s increasingly vast array of Webtop-based hardware accessories. The new Droid RAZR MAXX ups the thickness by eight hundredths of an inch, but is rumored to triple battery life for an extra $100. (We were testing the RAZR MAXX as this review went to publication.) if you must have Ice Cream Sandwich now, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is your only real choice; it’s just as large as the Spectrum and has a smoother UI, although its processor and camera fall slightly short in comparison, and it’s $100 more expensive.

For new England fans residing in Southwest Florida, well, they’ll be doing all that, too.

Local new England-themed bars like Foxboro’s, Boston Beer Garden and Lansdowne Street are gearing up for the influx of Patriots fans — and a smattering of Giant fans — that will be on hand for the biggest sporting event of the year to cheer on their hometown team in their new hometown.

“We are new Englanders from new England. we have an authentic new England menu as well with things like whole-belly fried clams and original lobster rolls,” explained Thom Popoli, owner of Foxboro’s, which is located on the corner of Tamiami Trail and Rattlesnake Hammock Road. “We will be filled with all of our regulars that are here around the bar every single day. That’s what makes it special every day and also what is going to make it a great Super Bowl for us, too.”

“We expect a huge crowd,” said Lansdowne Street Pub general manager Aaron Schimmel. “We get a pretty faithful group in here for all the Pats game, so we will be ready to go. we got a projection TV for out back and we are bringing in bleachers. We’re ready to go. We’re excited.”

“In our outdoor courtyard we put together a whole tailgating experience with an 8-foot by 8-foot projector screen and some tailgating food like sausage and peppers,” Boston Beer Garden owner Nick Zeto said of the festivities planned for the Immokalee Road location. “During halftime we will have Matty Jollie doing a rock set for those who don’t want to listen to Madonna.”

As each tavern proprietor admits, new England fans are some of the most ardent in all of the sports world.

“We are tremendously loyal fans because we put up with many years of mediocrity,” Popoli explained. “It’s only been since the Belichik-Brady era that the Patriots have enjoyed any success and after years of disappointment you get to really enjoy when success happens.”

“I think because they have been down on their luck for so long and now that they’ve been winning, they love it and they are proud of it,” Schimmel said with a chuckle. “They have a great energy and we love to have them here. Their fans have a sweet cockiness about them.”

“Patriots fans get a mixed rap but I think they are some of the greatest fans on earth,” Zeto said. “They are loyal. They are die-hard. it comes from winning and I think that gives them a bad rap sometimes. Same reason people don’t like Steelers fans or they don’t like Dallas fans. Plain and simple, it comes with the passion for your team. I like that enthusiasm. it connects you to your home even when you are out of your home like a lot of people down here.”

And no surprise, each expects the Patriots to come out victorious.

“I’ve never seen Bill Belichick lose two important games in a row to the same team,” Popoli said. “I know the Giants aren’t exactly the same team as ’07, the key players are still there, they still have the same coach, they still have the same Eli Manning.”

“Patriots are going to win,” Schimmel said. “I think it is going to be a good game, though.”

“Calling it Patriots by a touchdown,” Zeto added.

5 Exhibitions for the Paper Industry

Feb. 13 (Bloomberg) — Cable & Wireless Worldwide Plc, which has replaced two chief executives since June, advanced as much as 31 percent after Vodafone Group Plc said it’s in the early stages of evaluating a potential offer for the company.

Any bid for Cable & Wireless will likely be in cash, Vodafone, the world’s largest mobile-phone company, said in a statement today. Vodafone may offer 700 million pounds ($1.1 billion) while Apax Partners LLP may also consider a purchase, the Sunday Times reported yesterday.

Cable & Wireless, which has assets ranging from the largest British core fiber network to an overseas enterprise unit, previously rejected a bid for part of the company. Newbury, England-based Vodafone lacks a core fixed-line network in the U.K., needed to carry surging data traffic.

“There is no certainty that an offer will be made nor as to the terms on which any offer might be made,” Vodafone said in its statement.

Cable & Wireless Worldwide rose as much as 6.14 pence to 25.89 pence, the biggest intraday gain since Jan. 23, and traded 28 percent higher at 25.35 pence at 11:01 a.m. in London, giving the company a market value of 695 million pounds. Vodafone traded 0.5 percent higher at 173.45 pence. the operator has until March 12 to decide whether to make a formal offer.

Apax’s spokesmen didn’t immediately respond to a voicemail message left seeking comment.

Cable & Wireless Worldwide, which separated from its parent company in 2010, is revamping its business after Chief Executive Officer Jim Marsh and his successor John Pluthero stepped down last year. Its shares slumped 74 percent in the 12 months through Feb. 10. Gavin Darby, who was appointed CEO in November, previously headed Vodafone’s U.K. business and later oversaw its U.S., Africa, India and China operations.

While Cable & Wireless Worldwide assets are “particularly unattractive,” U.K. mobile operators such as Vodafone and Telefonica SA’s O2 could make more use of its network infrastructure, mark James, an analyst at Liberum Capital in London, said in November.

Cable & Wireless Worldwide said in June it “considered and rejected” an approach for its global business division. Pacnet Ltd. CEO bill Barney said on Sept. 14 that operator of undersea phone and Internet cables in Asia looked at Cable & Wireless Worldwide assets but didn’t plan to make a bid.

Speaking of centerpieces, I recommend an over-the-top chandelier as a focal piece – such as one of Foucault’s orb crystal chandeliers, it is sure to be a conversation piece in itself. this chandelier (by Restoration Hardware) is reminiscent of Gaga’s orb headpiece that she wore on the Fall Preview Issue (#60) of V Magazine or the Nasir Mazhar designed metal orbs that she wore in 2009 while performing at Saturday Night Live.

Texture is important when creating a Gaga-esque style. You can never have enough texture. Don’t be afraid to mix and match For example, you can try mixing silky soft bedding, in rich colours like fuchsia, royal purple or deep blue, with textured throw rugs or blankets. I recommend a beautiful sheepskin throw that you can elegantly drape at the foot of your bed to add a splash of colour and a touch of warmth. these rugs are also multipurpose because you can drape them over your chairs to protect the upholstery or add some comfort to your precious derriere. Don’t forget to add some fun to your accessories, like incorporating oversized throw pillows with cutes silk bows on them, which draws from Lady Gaga’s bow hair that she wore during her Poker Face days.

Go crazy with the wall colours. Don’t be afraid to use bold paint colours or even patterned wallpapers (remember to colour block one feature wall boldly with either paint or wallpaper and then mute the surrounding walls). if you’re going for the elegant Gaga look, I suggest using damask-patterned wallpaper in a dark colour, such as black or grey. You can even pick something that has a slight sheen to it. The dark colours will make your accents pop and draw more attention to your focal pieces, like the chandelier. A high gloss pink (or white) lacquered cupboard would not only act as a storage unit for your clothes, but would ground the space giving your colour palatte the ability to pop more. If you’re a guy and don’t want to add some of the frilly design elements, like the bows or girly colours, stay in the dark tones – like black, silver, and deep shades of blue (such as navy blue, cobalt blue or midnight blue) which will add more of a typical masculine element to the bedroom. You can even add in a splash of red as an accent colour (try Valentino Red) in some geometric shapes, like some geometric patterned mirrors, that are recurring throughout Gaga’s Poker Face video (and a current theme in her wardrobe, too). or incorporate a headboard made of leather that is reminiscent of Gaga’s biker-chick look on her Born this Way album.

A Lady Gaga Inspired Bedroom Design for a Young Adult

I learned last week the husband of a Facebook friend was killed in an accident Tuesday. They have a 14-year old son and a 10-year old daughter.

When I hear stories like this, I have to admit my faith takes a little beating. I don’t understand why these things happen. I mean, this very nice lady has lost her husband, and the kids lost their Dad.

The prevailing wisdom is there a purpose in everything that happens in our lives. however, it doesn’t make sense.

Maybe it’s not supposed to make sense. maybe we just need to believe these kind of events are for the greater good.

You know what, though I’m going to add this to my list of questions to ask God when it’s my turn to sit down with him. He’s definitely going to need some Tylenol after he’s finished with me. he will have a headache.

Events like this emphasize to me the importance of relationships. I’m learning, at a later age in life, to really hold onto and nurture those relationships that are important to me. up until now, it has been so easy to take them for granted.

What does this mean? Tell each and every important person in your life you love him or her. Every day. That’s right, EVERY DAY That’s your husband, your wife, your kids. and everyone else who is an important part of your life.

Stop taking the important folks in your life for granted. Talk to them; find out what’s going on with them. Just flat out pay attention.

Why? Because they may not be here tomorrow. I repeat, they may not be here tomorrow. for that matter, you may not be here tomorrow.

You can’t waste time. things go way too fast now. A lot faster than they used to.You know the old expression, here today, gone tomorrow Treat those important people in your life like there’s no tomorrow.

I have to do all of these things myself. I just assumed everyone’s going to be around forever. Well, that ain’t the case. maybe that’s one reason why I live in Georgia now. I was taking my family for granted. I need them, so I have to let them know I love them. I have to thank them for loving me.

Can you imagine what it would be like if everyone would do these things? I think the world would be a much happier place
